The Joya de Ceren archeological site is one of the most famous archeological sites in El Salvador and the Americas as well as being a UNESCO world heritage site.

Joya de Ceren is located in the department of La Libertad about 38 Kilometers from San Salvador, it is a popular tourist destination specially among archeologist and local students.

This hidden jewel is one of the most important archeological site in the Americas because it shows the everyday life of a Mayan farming community that lived here around the year 400 and was abandoned around the year 600th after a volcanic eruption forced the natives to flee the settlement, however, this volcanic eruption covered Joya de Ceren in many layers of volcanic ash which in turn protected this site from the elements as well as keeping it intact, and in a sort of time capsule for many centuries until it was discovered in 1976 when some construction workers discovered it by accident while building some storage silos. However, it wasn’t until 1993 when it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site and the only one of its kind in El Salvador.

The Joya de Ceren archeological site is one of the most famous archeological sites in El Salvador and the Americas as well as being a UNESCO world heritage site.

Joya de Ceren is located in the department of La Libertad about 38 Kilometers from San Salvador, it is a popular tourist destination specially among archeologist and local students.

This ancient village gives us an insight into how the pre-Hispanic people lived all those centuries ago, the houses are formed by 3 main structures which are made out of a bedroom, kitchen and a storage room, as well as having a farming area and in some cases, they even had a fence separating each property. Some of the cooking utensils found at this archaeological site include knifes, grinding stones, clay plates and storage containers with food remains that include beans, cocoa, and peppers.

El Salvador makes a major push towards renewable energy

El Salvador has signed a framework agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) this agreement aims to drive economic development using renewable energy sources, especially those indigenous to the country such as taking advantage of the country’s geothermal energy produced by the 170 volcanos El Salvador has, as well as hydropower, biomass, solar, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The Government wants to implement a long-term energy plan from 2020 to 2050, this energy plan aims to reduce the cost of electricity by investing in its own energy solutions and stop importing fossil fuel energy from abroad.

“El Salvador is a key partner in the implementation of IRENA’s regional programs in Central America and an active player in the Global Geothermal Alliance. El Salvador wants to move away from the old dirty fossil fuel and step into the modern era with renewable energy solutions, this is done not only to become energy-dependent and to reduce the electricity tariffs but also because the people of El Salvador have demanded it for so long, therefore solar PV, wind and as well as other renewable energy sources have boomed in El Salvador in recent years.

IRENA has made it clear that it wants to work closely with El Salvador in identifying opportunities for national projects that are suitable for financing, thanks to IRENA’S own Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF) Platform, which according to IRENA is “an inclusive, multi-stakeholder climate finance solution managed by the International Renewable Energy Agency to advance the energy transition across the Agency’s 166-strong membership” some of the projects will come from recommendations made by IRENA’s Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) which is a proprietary tool used for assessing a country’s needs for the development and deployment of renewable energy solutions, some other recommendations may also come from the NDC, or Nationally Determined Contribution, which is a national climate plan required by each country that signed the Paris agreement.

The construction has begun on the brand new state-of-the-art national library, the funds for this project were given by China, one of El Salvador’s many allies, in the form of a non-refundable donation, the total amount of this donation is 500 million dollars, however, the total amount allocated to the construction of the library, will be 54 million dollars and its design was inspired by the waves of the famous Salvadoran beaches and the many mountains and volcanoes in El Salvador, such as famous Playa del Tunco beach or the Volcano of San Salvador.

This library was conceived as part of President’s Bukele commitment to culture and education, therefore, this library will have, a theater, areas dedicated to scientific research, a special area for the national archives, restaurants, recreational areas as well as free internet and computers available for the public. This library will stay open 24 hours a day 365 days a week, it will also be located near other iconic buildings, such as the national palace and the capital’s cathedral in what is called the “historic center of El Salvador’”

This is a hospital dedicated to the comprehensive health care of pets, it has everything from a grooming area, to emergency rooms, operating rooms, areas for testing different kinds of samples taken from pets, recreational areas for pets, as well as resting areas for pet owners and the staff.
